strange behaviour of resources

When I send survivors on an automatic mission, resources either appear or disappear, the same thing happens when they return from a mission or when I tell them to clear up rubbish. This could potentially be an exploit, but the resources generated randomly in this way cannot be used to upgrade equipment at the base (small amount), worse still, it can wipe out my entire stock of wood, metal and cloth.
